I just had a conversation with Jake Morrison at Lyson, who told me just
about the same thing. They have a pdf on their website "Colour management
2002" which covers this issue and how to work around it.

Following his advice I updated ColorSync from 3.0, with a custom install
that included the Kodak CMM, which apparently is better at this.

The Kodak CMM DOES leave 255RGB where it is for both Pixl and Lyson generic
Epson 1290 fotonic inkset profiles, whereas Adobe ACE, Apple CMM and
Heidleberg CMM do not. Havn't tried the others.

This makes sense of the whole business, allows me to get some work done, and
moves me on to deciding whether the colour balance I am getting is good
enough or whether I want a tailor made profile.

As it turns out I am not the only one who has had this problem (Lyson have
written a fix, and the tone even has a 'popular name') I wonder why it took
so long to get the real answer... I can't believe that my original post was
that misleading.

Anyway, thanks to all. Question answered. Happy bunny.

Spending much too much time reading this list, so will have to change to the
digest version now.
