Hi Steve:

>Can you tell me what LF shift is?

Rise, fall and shift are movements up, down and sideways of a lens or
(film) back - they are not restricted to LF (Large format). You get
Shift (rise or fall) on PC (perspective control) lenses available for
35mm SLRs.

These movements allow you to move the film or CCD around the plane of
focus of the image produced by the lens.

If you use a lens with enough image circle to cover a 5x4 inch sheet of
film, you can move your CCD around the image and tile: take several
exposures to make up the "big picture".

The benefit of this is increased resolution or to overcome the
limitations of digital for ultra-wide angle: I have a 120 degree lens,
but it has an image circle of 166mm, and, last time I looked, they did
not make CCDs that big!
