Select and highlight a file on your computer & then press cmd + i. As an example use a tiff or something that you don't care about. This will bring up the stacked info panel and one of the menu items will be "Ownerships & Permissions".
Click down on the arrow to open this section and you'll see various menu items of which some options. In the right hand corner you'll see a padlock and clicking on this. Its possible that it will ask you for your administrator password. After inserting this if necessary, you can then change the permissions at will on any given file, but you should close the padlock at the end to save those changes. To trash stubborn items, select: owner (in my case) - Ashley (Me) Access - Read & Write Group - Admin Access - Read & Write Others - Read & Write Delete your trash! Many times you will get away with trashing something from OS 9, but other times you might make a real mess up. You have to remember that there will be a reason with a UNIX base for these permissions and its best to do these things by the book. Most of the freeware tools on versiontracker for emptying the trash in this way are merely using a UNIX command in the terminal do copy what I have shown here. If you don't feel comfortable doing what I have detailed above you can always download one of those, however I feel this will give you a slightly better understanding of what's under the hood in OS X and why certain things work the way they do.
