Oh you CAN do hardware calibration on LCD's. You'd want a spectrophotometer or Colorimeter specially suited for this (For example an Eye One Monitor or one of the newer Spyder's and several others). I did a seminar with Neil Barstow where we had the same image from a profiled printer in a GretagMacbeth Judge II light booth and on a Cinema Display 22". The similarity was astonishing as I'm sure the participants will agree to if asked.
