Make sure the modem is a network modem and not a USB one, there is only one
router I've seen that will drive a usb modem.

If however it is a usb modem you may as well get the combined modem/router
to replace it. We use a Netgear one (a DG814) it it was a doddle to set up
and works perfectly with out Airport network as well. It's got loads of
features and you set it up using your web browser.
