Andy, I wonder if you've got the stick at the wrong end? Converting a
TIFF to a jpeg using the 'maximum quality' file save setting means
_minimum compression_ and less image degradation
although I haven't (yet) tried Shanghara's method (overlaying images), I
have tried a couple of quick tests which may be of interest:
an image with a lot of detail and very little clear tone (eg, no sky) -
as TIFF at 4000 ppi 8-bit scan, file size 56MB, then two copies saved as
jpeg files, one at maximum quality/minimum compression which produced
file size just under 13MB, the other at medium quality/50% compression
which produced file size 1.4MB(!) - viewed side by side on monitor at
100% I could not see any differences/any obvious image degradation
(haven't tried one at minimum quality/maximum compression, yet)
an image with mixture of detail and smooth tones - a TIFF (4000 ppi
8-bit scan), resized to print to A3 (with text along edge), file size
42MB, then copy saved as jpeg file max quality/min compression, file
size 10.7MB - both printed out on 1290 using same settings/media -
unable to discern any difference at all between the two prints
nevertheless, for the time being, I prefer to (play safe and) stick with
PSD and TIFF, certainly for archiving (to CD), but might look into jpegs
for working/printing from HD
cheers
Geoff
