Well... here's how I do it... I don't mess around with gradients.  I don't
see the need and besides, gradients only work on flat planes.  I just copy
the picture as a seperate layer... then gaussian blur the top layer... then
use a fat, soft eraser brush and erase off everything that I want to be
sharp.  If I want to make it realistic, I just try to erase what I think
would be at a certain depth.  I can set different opacities for the brush if
I want to make partial erasures, but usually I just let the soft edge of the
brush do its work.  I think it works great.   Ever so much more control than
*real* depth of field.
