I also thought the Kodak had some problems with skin tones, which seemed to be a nasty and uncorrectable mixture of purple and greenish tones. Also every shot I have seen on the DCS back (and indeed 14n) seem to have great jumps of mid tones in areas like under a chin, where there is obvious stepping in the gradations, rather than a film like gentle transition. This was very apparent in the demo shots I was shown of hairdressers models. I don't know what the capture bit rate was of the Kodak, but it looked worse in practical use. Given that the DCS back and 14n use different sensors, I did wonder if this was a Kodak software issue. In the end the (comparative!) cheapness of the 1Ds and it's versatility won me over.

While all the reports and examples of the d1s tend to be excellent, I was wondering if anyone has done a comparison between it and a MF back such as a Sinar HR 23 and the likes.to see a portfolio go to http://www.davidpurdie.com
I'm interested just what the difference is between a 12 bit (Canon) and a 14 bit capture. While I understand in principle, I haven't seen how this plays out in an actual file. I have compared a D60 to a Sinar, and there IS a difference between shadow gradations and lower values; but then there's quite a difference in sharpness and resolution between those two.
