Broadly speaking , bigger bit depth gives wider dynamic range. This kind of information gets somewhat confusing when some manufacturers talk about 16bit capture when the 16 bits referred to are not all image information. > I have compared a D60 to a Sinar, >and there IS a difference between shadow gradations and lower values; >but then there's quite a difference in sharpness and resolution between >those two. Too right. Richard Lewis wrote:- >Also, there is mention of the fact that these new 35mm >digi cameras are becoming as good as MF cameras, but >are the leneses as good as, say RB67 lenses. Interestingly enough , although in theory the 35mm lenses should be better,we've found that Mamiya RZ lenses can be sharper ( possible because we're using the sweet spot in the centre of lens when used with the relatively smaller chip. However , both systems are blown away by dedicated digital lenses when using the backs in large format mode. Just to confuse the issue more , there's the new "54" chips to consider.Despite the 54 designation , the Sinar 54 is almost full frame 645. The results from one of these backs connected to a Mamiya 645 are outstanding. The five by four format also is ideally suited to most page layouts. BTW, we've just tried the 54 back in its 16 shot mode . A file size of 254 Mb in 8bit mode (original HDR 16bit file is 508Mb) produces 'Blade Runner' results. You can just keep zooming in and in! This is of course overkill for most jobs as ,in answer to previous posts , conventional 48 sheet posters are produced from A3 size files .
