Typical, I just threw one out about a month ago. Hadn't used it for years,
and as soon as its gone there's a use for it, sorry!

It was just as you describe, and old cable release & solenoid that were
"custom" fitted into a small maplins project box
Power source was a 12volt dc battery (I think.) Simple, yet effective.
I used to use it to fire a 645 camera that was positioned up a 100
pole...one of those ideas that everyone thought great, but very few actually
went ahead and booked!
