I today received from the USA some touch up paint for my Apple TiBook. It came by mail - correctly declared at $20 value - and I was asked for no duty or VAT. If it comes correctly declared through a proper route and customs don't ask for any duty nor VAT I see nothing wrong with putting it in my accounts at $20. If duty had been charged - well fine, and if Vat had been charged then I could have claimed it back as an input tax - but they weren't charged - so what's the problem?

If you import something into the UK, there is an import duty + VAT payable
on top (I'm pretty sure - since I've been charged this once on camera items
from the US going through a UK airport). I don't see how you can legally
claim them as business otherwise. Surely all imports to the UK have these
charges on them going through the legal route. Although I'm sure many people
simply don't pay them, but also hopefully don't put them on their accounts.
