Paul, I'm still running OS9.xx, so take this with a pinch of salt... I have always found Toast to be a bit flaky, especially when burning large discs. always getting burn failures etc.). I then switched to Apples built in "disc burner" and I have never had a problem. I assume that disc burner comes with OSX too. So I would use this. Pop in new disc, select the preferred CD format and then drag and drop the files you want to burn and hit "burn cd" in the finder. Easy peasey - then go and get another beer from the fridge and strum the guitar while the cd cooks - or alternatively do some more work...
