Given the fact that my desk was covered in bits of iBook only 2 hours ago, I am pleased and relieved that thanks to the help of Bill Martin, James Chastney and others, I now have an iBook with a 40GB HD (was 10GB). Changing the HD was terrifying, and I was amazed that it powered up when I put it together.
Carbon Copy Cloner worked beautifully and I have restored the old system onto the new HD with no problems. Something of a revelation (by the way, you don't need to hold down the 'T' key when restarting; the computer sees the Firewire HD as the system and boots from that. Disappointingly, there is no speed increase in Photoshop in spite of the increase in empty disk space, and a 5400 rather than a 4200 RPM drive (so that was a waste of an extra 40). However the machine has been given a new lease of life now that I can store several days worth of shots on the machine instead of burning CDs all day while shooting. I'll also be backing to iPod. The iPod does not give any speed increase when used as a scratch disk. Many thanks for all your help.
