Unfortunately all scanners are only as good as the operator.

Just an idea, but I often recommend client to shoot 'finished' prints back
onto transparency (6x7 cm) and then use these as masters for scanning /
repro work. It may sound like a long way round, but you'd be amazed how
useful these catalogues can be.

In my opinion, drum scans will not solve the problem any more than a 'high'
end Scitex flat bed for example. However a good scanner operator will
deliver the job just as good as the originals...
