I noted a number of comments today about off-List commenting, and a note that some of these even get to the Archive.
I thought it worth while explaining that I often supply answers off-List for the simple expedient that it keeps traffic to a workable level, and in some instances is less time consuming to carry out a two-way conversation by phone than burdening the List with several responses to get the message across. I also sometimes email privately.
There are several reasons for this approach; sometimes it can save embarrassment! Other times the answer can only be supplied when there is further detail, or the need is of specific interest.
However, if I feel the answer is of general interest or I feel a point has been overlooked I will answer on-List. It is all too easy to try to reply to every question raised with 'Me too' answers, but I tend to only do that when people are trying to get a consensus.
I sometimes feel guilty about off-List replying, hence when I read several mentions, I thought it best to own up to being guilty of the practice.
I did a Google search to see how much appeared in their Lists, of comments I had made to ProDIG, and was quite surprised, and I certainly have no fears over security.
I hope that my approach to the List is a balanced one. It is a great resource. This and MacinTouch are my staple diet!
