Ian, I do believe the ccd is charged in b and uncharged when the eh-4 external adapter is used in conjunction with the proper settings in the camera. I have a d1x, not a d100 so ymmv. That said, you can still clean the ccd, actually the ccd has a filter over it that you will be cleaning. The real downside is if your battery should loose power and the shutter closes while your in cleaning the filter. Be very careful you have a fully charged battery if you choose to do it that way.
