That is my normal modus operandum. Works fine and saves mucking around with cables. It's certainly pretty quick though I've never actually timed it. Until I got a TiBook I never had Firewire but certainly it beats USB hands down. The card just mounts as another volume on the desktop. I've used it with OS9, OSX and Win 98. and I see no reason why it shouldn't work on XP.
