If I understand you correctly I see something very similar (possibly the
same?) on my windows XP systems. I can match the screen view (the
desktop, system based previews etc) to the windows view IF I CONVERT the
file to the monitor profile in Photoshop save it and view it on the
desktop/windows graphics viewer it will exactly match the Photoshop
appearance. Otherwise the system shows a bluish colour rendering and
Photoshop a yellowish colour rendering.

I have assumed this is because I have a monitor calibrated using the
optical spyder and the colours in Photoshop (and Illustrator etc) are
adjusted to Adobe 1998. I found the difference less when I used sRGB as
my default RGB working space and used a monitor with a factory setting
'sRGB'.

Hope fully Neil or Thomas will have the patience to explain what is
happening - I think the more we learn about colour management the more
there is to learn!
