If I understand you correctly I see something very similar (possibly the same?) on my windows XP systems. I can match the screen view (the desktop, system based previews etc) to the windows view IF I CONVERT the file to the monitor profile in Photoshop save it and view it on the desktop/windows graphics viewer it will exactly match the Photoshop appearance. Otherwise the system shows a bluish colour rendering and Photoshop a yellowish colour rendering.
I have assumed this is because I have a monitor calibrated using the optical spyder and the colours in Photoshop (and Illustrator etc) are adjusted to Adobe 1998. I found the difference less when I used sRGB as my default RGB working space and used a monitor with a factory setting 'sRGB'. Hope fully Neil or Thomas will have the patience to explain what is happening - I think the more we learn about colour management the more there is to learn!
