Glyn All zooms are to one extent or another a compromise. I use the 24-70 f2.8L and the 70-200 f4.0 on the 1Ds. Both exhibit significant pin-cushion distortion depending on focal length, aperture and subject distance. That distortion is obviously worse close to the edges of the chip so that shooting something like fire places in a room set the subject could occupy no more than the centre two thirds of the chip area which was ideal for the composition. Any closer to the edge and I would have had some correction to do. However such distortion would not be noticeable in portraiture. I have no experience of the Tamron 28-105 but if you are expecting perfection from any lens of this zoom range I feel you are expecting too much. And while we are on the topic I ran a distortion test with an identical Canon 24-70 f2.8L. Distortion was identical but one lens (mine) was badly lacking on contrast and colour saturation. The reason? I had a Hoya SMC UV filter on the front as protection for the front element. Never noticed any adverse effects shooting film on the RZ (though never done an A/B comparison either) but the image degradation on the Canon was severe. So it's gone.
