Dear Listees,

A strange thing has started to happen recently with a card reader where it
won't recognise the files on the card. I am running XP

Up to now we have had no problems in downloading the files from a D60
using a firewire card reader. The files are on microdrive(s). Just a
couple of weeks or so ago, we started to have real problems. Instead of
thumbnails in the download window, there are yellow boxes with
questionmarks. This then freezes the program and usually the computer.
Freezing of our XPs is something we never see. I thought the card reader
had been damaged by the lightning strike that I had had, so bought a new
one. Same problem. Moved to a different work station, with no success.

Changed microdrives, tried jpgs instead of RAW, still doesn't work. The
images can be seen on the camera, I should mention. On the second
workstation, where the Zoombrowser had to be newly installed (the 4.02
updated version) it seems as if the driver for the reader cannot be found.
These readers don't have software with drivers to install, as they are
just plug and play and don't need the drivers. There are no drivers on the
sites to download (as they are not needed, supposedly!). So in this case,
the message I get is just that it doesn't find a camera. When I plug in
the driver, sometimes it will show the drive on my computer explore
window, sometimes it doesn't. If it shows the drive, the files in the
right pane are just unrecognised icons, with little squares next to them,
all 684 kb and 64 of them.

If I try to open the RAW image in Capture One DSLR light, I see nothing on
the drive.

Has anyone else experienced this, and do they know a fix? I assume that
this must be something to do with the OS and all the security fixes that
have been posted and downloaded lately.

I have searched MS site, and come up with a fix for firewire drives that
can't be 'enumerated', but it stresses only to use this where you have
that problem. As I don't know what 'enumerate' means when it comes to
drives, I am not anxious to risk other problems.

I used this card reader with no problems at all until a few weeks ago.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Best regards,

Ellie
