I use to use this technique all the time back in the days when Photoshop didn't have layers and the dynamic range of reasonably priced desktop scanners was marginal at best. I don't use it as much today but its still a useful tool to have in the box. If you've not tried it before, realize that its probably simpler than it sounds. You only have to align the clone tool once and then you can paint (clone) away throughout the document.
