GIMP is definitely worth a try. look at OSX online help in Panther.

I think most photographers will find Gimp Print dither a bit coarse
tho, OK for proofing I guess, but coarse dither can really come between
a viewer and a photograph.

I'd love to hear of any drivers where they got the dither as good as
Epson do.
