Hi Steve , Nicely summed up , but there's also the issue of lack CCD cooling for reduced noise ( often more aparent as decreased dynamic range on SLRs due to software implications). Add to this the compact arrangement of electronics that adds to noise problems. Speaking of dynamic range , there is also some debate over manufacturers description of 'bit depth' when it comes to spec. In theory , bigger bit depth gives better dynamic range , but in many cases descriptions of 16 bit , 14 bit etc are not always accurate representations of true image information. However , high end chips generally have extended tonal range. Also antialising are filters used in many 35mm systems soften the image ( to avoid moire ) before applying USM to compensate for the loss. USM is often built into some cameras software , often leading to strange artifacts.Speaking of which , take a look at the blue channel on the 1DS . And then there is the limitation of optics on 35mm systems that aren't designed for CCD technology. And of course there's the added benefits of live video , focusing on the chip itself , camera movements , not only 4 shot ,but 16 shot capability, and the added benefits of the Macroscan.
