Just checking, but you are throwing away the icon as part of your ejection?? You need to unmount the drive before you disconnect it and chucking the icon is the easiest way.
Yes, I'm doing everything by the book, and whether ejecting by dragging to the trash or clicking eject, the next card I insert doesn't appear on the desktop until I've unplugged and replugged the reader into the Mac.
