Thanks to the list all for your suggestions. The camera is out of warranty, but, the 'reasonable period' rule applies. The issue is not that Nikon are refusing to take it as a warranty repair, but their inability to tell me when the camera will be repaired. They have a D100 lying around but they won't loan that to me while they wait for the part that they don't know when will arrive for the repair that they sat on the estimate for over a week. I asked James Lindsey yesterday lunchtime if I could have a loan, still no answer. Jeremy Gilbert here we come!
