I use a grey desktop with a greyscale across the bottom of the display. If I use the standard apple profile then the desktop is cool, if I use the the apple calibration the desktop is better but still cool. When I use the spyder, the desktop becomes warmer and neutral however the greyscale shows reds and purples within the quarter tones to black( akin to split selenium toning). Overall the colours look a good match to an old Radius and a LaCie ( both crt) but the darker shadows show a tone that is not there. If the greyscale is consistent( if a little cool) without photocal then it must be either the software ( doubtful) the spyder (possible) or the operator(most likely) that is at fault.
