I've just found the notes I made on the duty charged for importing cameras:
Having obtained the relevant classification codes for Film Cameras, Digital Cameras and Lenses, the rates of duty quoted were thus:
35mm SLR Film camera code 9006510000 Duty 4.2%
Digital camera code 8525401100 No Duty Lens if purchased with and on camera No Duty
However, if purchased separately Lens 25mm to150mm dia 60mm to190mm code 9002110050 6.7% Lens other focal lengths code 9002110090 6.7%
As the lady in the National Advice Service reminded me, do not forget that if you are travelling back from the US, and the camera or lens is for your own personal use, it can be classed as part your personal allowance of goods to �145 free of duty.
This was some months ago and the rates may have changed slightly. However, i imagine the classification codes are the same so it would be easy to check.
