I have seen the vertical lines (occasionally) and I have associated it with
oversharpening. That is to say I think it is there sometimes very faintly
but have only really noticed it in very sharpened files, which exaggerates
the effect. <<

David, there are some high pass filter and extreme USM settings and or
equalize and or other methods to help see what 'flaws' an image contains in
Photoshop, as well as looking at individual channels in the source space and
or LAB AB channels .

Those with Binuscan PhotoRetouchPro could perhaps comment  on the 'B-Xray'
or whatever it is called. I have considered this feature to be more
marketing hype than useful (granted I have not used PRP), but with this
thread about flaws in a file which become more noticeable once editing takes
place, it may be worth looking into, or perhaps a helpful list member who
has PRP looking at the files.
