Is this the first time its happened? Have you shot with the same camera lens combination in this same situation before with good results? Could it be because you are using a larger expanse of white background than previously?

Perhaps its a combination of factors but we always keep the amount of white background to the absolute minimum to avoid flair and loss of contrast when shooting film, and also tightly mask at the lens... I'm sure digital is no different. Apologies if you know all this stuff, but there may be others here who may need the reminder.
