Thanks every one for the help over this problem. The pictures all had a brown caste and no contrast. The re-shoot on tranny with exactly the same set up came out perfectly. As I said in my first posting all my usual work, architecture, cityscapes and portraits in and out the studio have turned out fine on the 10d. The problem was just with the still lives against white background. The consensus seems to be to dump the canon software and up grade to CS using the inbuilt raw converter. So that is what I'll do.
