I believe that Ebay will eventually fail due to the inadequate policing of a potentially
great system.
They actually rely on you, the user, to police the system.
Most unacceptable.
Hang on!
The site is open for people to sell ANYTHING. The people who run it are pretty damned hot at knocking illegal items on the head, even allowing certain items to only be sold in certain territories. However, how can you expect someone in an organisation like that to know what a 400mm 2.8 L series should cost as well as a 42" plasm screen and a pair of manolo's and a rolex, oh and a commemorative plate? The whole idea of e-bay is that it is self policing, that's what the feedback is for; I've never walked into Curry's and seen a list of complaints stuck to the wall, on e-bay you do. On the occasions that I have seen a suspicious item and reported it, the item has been removed within 24 hours and I have received a personal e-mail from someone in the organisation outlining what action was taken and thanking me for brining it to their attention. And no, its not a form letter because on occasion i have replied to the person who sent it and entered into conversation about the situation on e-bay.
On the whole its much safer to buy on e-bay than it is to pick something up second hand from a private buyer, if you are careful!
