If it is any help, all 3 of my 35mm 'analogue' cameras have more on film
than in the viewfinder. Indeed, this was clear from the advertising. It has
never bothered me because when mounting transparencies, or printing negs,
one (almost) always has to lose a bit of image behind the mask. I prefer to
have extra image that I can lose at my discretion, then for it to be 100%
correct and to have to lose carefully composed image when mounting (meaning
that things which shouldn't end up bleeding off the edge of the shot).

I would assume that, certainly in a 35mm format digi, the economics of
manufacturing would lead to exactly the same 'erring on the small side' for
the viewfinder part of the system (which is the same as in the analogue
cameras, after all), so that either customers do not complain that they are
missing parts of the images that they composed through the viewfinder, or
that assembly of the cameras does not become stupidly expensive in order to
achieve 100% accuracy.

Incidentally, I am sure that most of you have shared my frustration at
finding that different transparency mounts crop different amounts of
image... even within the same manufacturer... the more "extra" image i get
the handier (until the point that things that were excluded from the shot
make it into the crop).
