Snip: Anyone knows of any light source that will produce something so
diffuse that will not show the point of origin of the light?

With reflective objects, the true tonality of its surface is shown by
the image reflected in the surface. Any shape of light, large or small
has an edge, and that edge reflects in the surface of the object.
Edgeless reflections come from edgeless sources. Use a studio with white
floor curved up to white walls, curved to a white ceiling, giving
seamless reflections.
This kind of studio is commonly called an "egg".

Bounce various lights off the floor/walls/ceiling until happy.
Variations in the brightness of areas of the "source" give rise to
variations in tone on the surface of the object. Use black panels to
hide bright areas not in frame from the camera lens, to reduce flare.

Use a spot meter to determine densities of various points on the
subject, deciding which areas to render as "true tonality", as
"highlights", or as "shadows"

Will the ability to judge tones by eye become a forgotten art, as
successive generations rely only on the info palette? ;-)
