After finally upgrading last old mac to OSX, have discovered that baby Umax Astra 6400 scanner (for low res scans only!), is not supported under OSX 10.3 UNLESS you buy 'Silverfast' software from some US website for $60!

I know nothing about what a Umax Astra does, but for very little more than the Silverfast upgrade, you could buy a whole new flatbed scanner that works very well in OS-X. I bought a Canon scanner off of the US Apple Store for $99 that works great as a small USB powered unit to use with a Powerbook running Panther. I think even cheaper models are available. I chose this one for faster USB2 support. I use it for copying, faxing, email and the occasional print scan for editing ( it's more convenient to use than my Imacon with quality to spare). This is a reflective only scanner but they make film capable models for little more. This thing is loaded with productive features that make routine lo res scans a breeze to perform. Its resolution and performance are sufficient to do reasonably high quality scans of a good glossy 8x10 print. I've made repro quality print scans on far lesser flatbed scanners that cost me MUCH more.
