There are indeed 1024 bytes in a kilobyte, unless you happen to be selling
hard disks when the numbers can mean a lot of different things.

To keep it list relevant ;-) there are similar issues with formatted storage
media in cameras (a 512MB CF card that my 1Ds says is full, reads as 467MB
when copied to my hard disk)

FWIW there are 4 bits to the nibble, 8 to the byte and any number your CPU
manufacturer feels like to the word (I've worked on machines with odd
numbers like 7 and 60 bits to the word in the past)
