On my PC/XP Pro I have to use Ctrl+Alt + C, as described in the above link, not simply Alt + C, which doesn't work. Alt + 0169 doesn't work either. No idea why.

Are you typing the 0169 using the keys that also have the )!^( symbols?
Or are you using the keys on the numeric keypad.
At least in my email program (Eudora) the Ctrl+Alt + C doesn't work. It does work in Microsoft Word, however.
