After quite a bit of research, I've finally found a supplier for new backlight bulbs for the PowerBook G3's LCD-Screen. (In case you didn't know this: The LCD screen is powered through a long, thin lightbulb which sits on the bottom of the screen, on top of the hinges. As the bulb gets older, the LCD screen loses brightness/contrast.) I never realized how low-contrast my screen was until I had my PowerBook standing next to a new iBook.
I've got Apple's PDF repair manual for the Powerbook - couldn't see any Copyright notice, so I reckon it's alright to share it! The bulb seems to be soldered on. In order to get access to it, one has to take the screen apart. I haven't done it myself, but it really doesn't sound like rocket-science and can be done with a philips-screwdriver / plastic tool.
I was wondering whether anyone here on the ProDig list would like to get together with me and order a bulb for their PowerBook G3 - to get the price down a bit. I can't tell a definite price for the bulbs yet, because the supplier is actually the manufacturer of the bulb - and they produce all sorts of bulbs for various brands. Before they can tell me a definite price, they need to know the exact measurements of the bulb - Which means I need to disassemble my screen.
For the moment, I'd like to 'test the water' and see whether I can find 4-5 people here to share the minimum order costs of 60, before I actually disassemble my screen...
The bulbs should come to about 15-25 each, including shipping. Also, I'd be buying the ones for the G3 Powerbook Pismo 500MHz ONLY! The older models (Wallstreet, Bronze Keyboard) might have a different bulb size!!!
(The 'Pismo' model can be recognized by its 2 built-in FireWire ports and the word "PowerBook" written on the bottom of the screen, rather than "G3 PowerBook").
The whole deal shouldn't take longer than 2-3 weeks I suppose. So... If you'd like to join in, please drop me an e-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Cheers Bjorn
