What I had learned about 1Ds battery comes from the manual.

It's a common flaw of this battery technology to have a "memory", i.e. if you load the battery which is not empty you wouldn't be able to use it furthermore at it maximal capacity. Of course you must do it some times to see the difference.

The refresh function allows you to empty the battery, very slowly. A full loaded battery requires nine hours to be emptied. My experience is that a battery who can't no more power the camera needs at least one hour to be "refreshed", but I saw some requiring two hours.

For my own I use to refresh as much as I can and exceptionally, in emergency, I load the battery without refreshing or a battery which is not exhausted. For one year I had only a crash for my three current ones and I made 4 cycles of the counter.
