Unfortunately this sounds like one of the great battery myths I was trying
to see past. Have a look at:

for a discussion of the so called 'memory effect'.

I'm happy to accept the idea that Canon wouldn't put the feature on the
charger for no good use, but I doubt it's needed -every- time?
