Thanks to all for the responses on this one. I have included a few below :-
"I use the Velvet/2100 version, and have found it to be spot-on." "I have used Somerset and the results are fine but I find the Hahnemuhle feeds better." "Smooth Art [Photo Rag] is plainly a larger gamut and also has a darker black too" I am using the Epson R800/PC/PS7 with OEM inks and 'canned' Epson profiles. I have printed a test image on four different papers, Epson Premium Glossy, Epson Archival Matte (my local Jessops has some), Hahnemuhle Photo Rag (308gsm) and Somerset Enhanced Satin. The Photo Rag has better blacks and is more vibrant than the Somerset. The Archival Matte is really good, lots of detail and good colour but whiter than the Rag. The Somerset is flat and disappointing. The Premium gloss is also very good, but the print lacks 'sparkle' when compared to the Rag/Archival Matte. I am conscious that all this may well be turned upside down by using custom profiles, however, it is not an option to custom profile all the papers before choosing one or two. The more I look at the Photo Rag and Archival Matte prints, the more I am impressed. Ordering some Photo Rag today from Paper Spectrum (32.99 +vat/free postage). I will be trying a canned Epson profile on Ilford Smooth Pearl later, I'll let you know how it turns out.
