Just a quick post to confirm the original on-topic (to the original question) part of my post.

Create a new action set/action with the only recorded step being changing a 8bpc file to 16bpc. Create a droplet from this action. Drag multiple files onto the droplet and they will appear in Photoshop as high bit files.
