Applying a heavy curve to a grad in 8 bit leaves mid tone banding, in 16 bit it doesn't. Conversion dithers make no visible difference.

I've just applied a couple of large reverse moves to a grad in 8 bit and a duplicate in 16 bit, then brought the16bit back to 8bit and there is v. slight banding and the histogram is still intact but not as nice as when it started out.
The 8bit file on the other hand is showing a lot of strong banding and the histogram is good enough to comb your hair with. And for the "wags" here, I've still got mine thanks!
