Just tried the experiment and you are right!!!

Whilst there is a significant tonal improvement between the 8 bit produced
image and the image first manipulated in 8 bit then changed to 16 bit and
then back to 8 bit at the end, there is virtually no discernable difference
between the 8 to 16 to 8 bit image and the image that was manipulated
entirely in 16 bit before being dropped back to 8 at the end!

So, as you say, the perceived improvement must be due almost entirely to the
dithering in the 16 to 8 bit final transition.

Thanks a bunch - this means I can work in 8 bit (much quicker) and make the
8-16-8 bit enhancement at the end as part of an Action.
