I've tried a 300D with a variety of lenses
and mixed feelings. The picture quality, in general, astounded me - until I
looked closely at high contrast edges where, for example, there was a dark
foreground against a bright blue sky (say a building roof against the sky);
there was unacceptable (*really* unacceptable) colour fringing.

Chris,

I'm in the early months of getting to know my D100, and this is one of the first potential snags that I spotted. Colour fringing is something that seems to appliy to all DSLRs - the 1Ds included. You can minimise it by using really good glass, and there are software fixes - as other people have pointed out. But it'll always be there. It's a factor of chip / lens design rather than something that you can buy out of at higher price levels.

Having said all that, my LS4000 produces slight colour fringing sometimes too...
