I just aim an on-camera flash anywhere away from the set, up to the ceiling or off a wall on low power. Works like a charm.

The other alternative if your studio flashes have IR sensors on them, is to tape a piece of gelatine IR filter over the on-camera flash. Its almost black, so no white light gets through.
