A twelve inch iBook is even less, and is very well specified.

However, my concerns are as follows:
If it breaks, it will need to go back to Apple - given some of the rants
I've read here recently that is not a good thing.

I read the rants, and sympathised, but it was sheer bad luck. That sort of thing is NOT typical. Really.

I don't mind spending money on software if the thing works, but it seems the
operating system is getting constantly upgraded

This is a Good Thing. When OS X was first released, it was pretty dire, according to some. It's grown awesomely thanks to frequent updates and is now as smooth as a very smooth thing indeed.

and not all stuff is backward compatible.

What stuff, as a matter of interest?

So, the question is:
Are there any Mac service people out there who can repair equipment out of
warranty and is Apple the only source of parts?

I'm sure someone else will answer this better than I can, as I've never had a problem in 14 years. I'm not saying there aren't problems, just that I've never had one. I do know that there are third-party fixers for Macs, though.

Is the Jackdaw in me being seduced by the lovely shiny metal case and the
cool 'creative' image or is there a sound business reason for getting one
instead of a Windows laptop?

Yes.
a) It lasts a long time. I'm running OS X on a G4/450 which was made before I'd ever heard of OS X, before it was even being touted. It runs fine. This machine is around four or five years old.

b) The machine credits you with some intelligence; this is nice.
