I know this is potentially starting a pointless argument, but seeing as Richard did ask, here's my musings:
I run Windows XP Pro. Been looking at Macs on and off for a while and as I'm at the point of ordering a laptop, I decided that a Powerbook was a fairly cost effective way of dipping my toe in - a 12" Powerbook is less than a Sony Vaio. However, my concerns are as follows: If it breaks, it will need to go back to Apple - given some of the rants I've read here recently that is not a good thing. I don't mind spending money on software if the thing works, but it seems the operating system is getting constantly upgraded and not all stuff is backward compatible. On the other hand, I read of people who've used Macs for years and wouldn't use anything else, running a whole barrage of networked systems with ease. So, the question is: Are there any Mac service people out there who can repair equipment out of warranty and is Apple the only source of parts? I don't want this to de-generate into a 'mine's better than yours' - God knows, Windows Plug and Pray can be a bit of an experience...I'd just like to know if when it breaks, are Apple the only source of salvation? Is the Jackdaw in me being seduced by the lovely shiny metal case and the cool 'creative' image or is there a sound business reason for getting one instead of a Windows laptop?
