Been using the 18-70 for ~6 weeks, and am well impressed. You don't say what you want the lens for, but your talk of the 12-24 suggests landscape? I've used the 18-70 for both portrait and landscape work. It gets a wee bit soft at max aperture, but anything below 5.6/8 and I have had no problems. I use it on both an S2 and a D70, usually shooting RAWs. Not built to take huge knocks, but OK. Optically it's probably better than my Nikon 24-120.
