I apologise if this posting is not digital in the strictest sense of the term but...
Advances in imaging technology are bringing rapid changes to our industry. Photographers are being forced to invest in costly new technology and in many areas fees do not reflect this. We need all the exposure we can get to promote our work to existing or potential clients. I was saddened therefore to hear that AOP's Shot Up North has been axed. Previously it had been proposed that the annual awards exhibition and associated book would be transformed into an on-line exhibition in order to reduce costs. It seems that this will not happen. Surely the costs of a cyber exhibition cannot be prohibitive? Along with the demise of the IDEA awards I feel we have lost a valuable show-case for our work which can only be to the detriment of our members. Since, if I may be so bold, the main AOP Awards do not fully reflect photography as practised every day by the broader membership, what opportunities do we now have for showing out talents to the world at large? I was under the impression that the AOP was attempting to embrace a wider audience in a changing global marketplace. Scrapping SUN seems to be a move in the opposite direction. Is it too late? Or can something be done?
