Thanks to Ian Reynolds & others for your replies on this one. Alas no joy. As I thought there was no Blaster virus on the laptop, but I re-installed XP Pro anyway & updated. I don't get Microsoft messages anymore just "USB device not recognised." When I open the software (inc Vuescan) a "scanner not connected" message. Driving me mad. As the scanner works with my desktop I know it's not the hardware or cable, so must be the USB port. I read on the computers' website (Compaq Presario) not to use cables longer than 3mtr. Could that really be the problem?
